Dating while getting a divorce

The time after separation from spouse can be difficult as one has to undergo various emotional as well as psychological issues. During this time, many people think that having the support of a loving person can help them in coping with the emotions that they are going through. With this in mind many individuals choose to enter the dating world. However, while getting into this they do not know what would be the repercussions of dating while getting a divorce.

Though there is nothing illegal about dating while divorcing the spouse, it is a thing that is looked down in most countries.

Dating during separation

In some countries, a person is considered to be married till all the legal divorce proceedings are complete. In such cases, dating while getting a divorce can be considered as adultery or infidelity and can cause you certain complications during the divorce process. Hence, attorneys advise their clients to stay away from dating while they are getting divorced. Though all divorces are not same, dating while the divorce process is going on can give rise to various problems. Here are some of the issues that could arise if a person decides to start dating during divorce process.

Problems from spouse

Many times when a person starts dating during the annulment process, it is not taken lightly by the spouse. Even though, the person had been a loyal husband or wife during their marriage, having an affair when they have not legally divorced can be considered by the spouse as cheating. The thought that a spouse has moved on easily can anger the other spouse and he/she could decide to take revenge during the divorce process.

In such case, divorce which could have ended amicably may become difficult, expensive as well as bitter. The spouse may decide to punish the dating spouse by fighting for full custody of the children and by refusing to pay any kind of support or alimony to the other spouse.

Problems with children

Itís best to avoid dating during legal separation if there are children from marriage. This is because children might not be ready to accept a new person in their father/motherís life, especially when their divorce is not fully complete. Beginning a new relationship during the divorce process can isolate the children from their parent which could damage their relationship to a severe extent. Also seeing their dating parent with some another person can make them sympathize with the other parent which could cause the dating parent from losing their custody.

Legal problems

Along with the problems with the spouse and children, dating during divorce can lead the spouse to various legal problems too. Most times, judges do not think very highly of a person who indulges in dating before he/she is legally divorced from their spouses. This attitude can go against the dating spouse while deciding things like child custody, child or spousal support, property division etc.

Looking at the above factors, it can be believed that dating while getting a divorce is a very bad idea. Hence, the best thing one can do is to stay away from getting into romantic relationship until he/she has been legally divorced.
